In conjunction with BGL: Project for Don River No. 9 hosted a series of Art and Ecology Field Trips to the Lower Don River integrating visual art, environmental issues, science and social history. During their visit to the site students discovered and discussed BGL's sculptural project, they explored the natural and social history of the Lower Don and found out how our everyday actions affect the health of the river. In response the students created their own sculptures out of clay by the banks of the river.

Just as BGL's work initiates wider ranging discussions, the information and activities in the Resource Guide are broad in scope - addressing a wide range of science, art and social studies curriculum expectations in a systems approach to integrating Art and Ecology for this and by extension, other river environments and water issues.
Through inquiry questions, worksheets and activities, the Resource Guide outlines ecological issues facing the Lower Don, introduces the students to groups working on present concerns and future initiatives and culminates in Part Four: Stewardship Through the Lens of the Artist, where students are directed in the making of an artwork connected to the ecological issues and ideas explored.
Reference is made to contemporary art throughout the Resource Guide to initiate and stimulate thought and ideas; to illustrate, inform and enhance the issues and ideas discussed; and so that children can begin to see a range of approaches taken, and concerns dealt with by contemporary artists.
